Stiegg Salander, Finnish Secret Agent

Tomorrow I'll be playing in a one-shot RPG inspired by spy dramas like Burn Notice (a show I've heard amazing things about and haven't yet seen). We'll be using the D20 Modern rules (I'm curious to see how they work, because I've thought about using them for a Torchwood game someday), and I've decided to play a Finnish spy named Stiegg Salander. The name and some of the character background is inspired by the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (though my character is Finnish instead of Swedish), and I just had to tie the character into the fascinating Wikileaks saga. Finland's intelligence agency is called SUPO, which stands for a very long, unintelligible name in Finnish. Instead of preparing the normal prose background, for this game we all filled out questionnaires prepared by the game director. Our characters are starting out at level 5, and the director had the cool idea of giving each character some minor bonuses depending on which intelligence outfit they belong to. My character turned out to be something of a combination Techie/Face, the latter role one I'm definitely not used to playing.

Anyway, without further ado, here's Stiegg Salander (I actually have plenty of ado left, but I'm saving it for a special occasion):

2) “Skorpion”, a computer hacker and member of Wikileaks who is a close confidant of Julian Assange; Skorpion feeds Assange “hacked” files (actually obtained by SUPO) to embarass selected countries.

Nationality: Finnish

Ethnicity: Nordic Caucasian

Languages Spoken: Finnish, English, German, Russian, Saami

Parent’s Names, ages, and current status:

Anne Salander, 61, Employed at Daycare (mother)

Bjorn Salander (father) (deceased)

Siblings Names, ages, and current status:

Erica Borgër, 27, Married freelance journalist for a newspaper

Give brief summary of conditions growing up and current relationship with family:

Bjorn (father) died when Stiegg was 11 and was a spy for SUPO killed mysteriously while on a foreign mission.

Stiegg was a happy child until his father’s death. He became a frustrated youth with few friends.

Stiegg dotes on his younger sister and widowed mother, neither of which know anything about his secret life. He only manages to visit them in Helsinki a few times a year since he spends most of his time “in Germany” working for the steel manufacturer.

Additional notes regarding role in community, time growing up, and early life prior to becoming an active agent:

Stiegg became an impressive computer hacker as a teenager.

Part 2 Early Career:

State how you were recruiting in to serving in your current agency:

SUPO caught Stiegg hacking into classified Finnish government databases just for fun. A “friend of his father” recruited Stiegg into SUPO.

What is your motivation for working in intelligence/counter-intelligence:

To discover who was responsible for the death of his father.

What theatre of operation did you work in:

Various countries in Western Europe as one of Julian Assange’s top lieutenants.

Minor missions in various countries of the former Soviet Union

No experience in Asia.

Current status within agency:

Operational

List your first five operations and give a brief outcome of these missions:

  1. Industrial espionage of Russian bank investing heavily in Finland. Required breaking and entering and planting of surveillance devices. Successful.

  1. Catch leak within SUPO. Required intensive analysis of computer and phone records of 27 suspects. Narrowed list to three possible candidates. All three were dismissed, and one of them (Wäinö Linna) has held a grudge against Stiegg ever since.

  1. Impersonate German consular attache at meeting of European Union parliament executive in order to plant false documents to influence transferral of high-speed rail funds from Germany to Finland. Information successfully planted, but Stiegg was detected by German counter-intelligence and narrowly escaped after a high-speed chase.

  1. Install surveillance devices in conference room of International Olympic Committee during discussion of Helsinki’s bid to host Winter Olympics. Installation successful, but last minute change of rooms negated results.

1. Fabricate and circulate incendiary documents to increase Chechnyan terrorism in Russia, and thus draw Russian attention away from Finland. Success unclear.

List rank and names of your immediate superiors (make a note of your relationship with these people):

Illya Martën, Section Chief (Illya knew Stiegg’s father and feels guilty about his death, so he takes pity on Stiegg)

Ilkka Salmi, Director-General of SUPO (barely knows Stiegg)

Anne Holmlund, Interior Minister (does not know Stiegg)

List rank and names of five co-workers and the role they performed in their agency (make a note of your relationship with these people):

Agent Vesa-Matti Loiri, Field Operative (polite & professional)

Analyst Pentti Siimes, Computer Management (friendly & jocular)

Engineer Lars Sonck, Gadgets & Gear (antagonistic)

Special Agent Rudolf Koivu, Internal Affairs (acquaintances)

Support Assistant Kalevi Aho, Background & Preparation (Stiegg is madly in love with her, but she pretends not to notice)

List any medals or service commendations you received and what they were received for:

None

List any career high points:

List any career low points:

To date, most of Stiegg’s operations have met with mixed success and he has not distinguished himself.

Part 3 Current Career Status:

Give a brief summary of your own status within the intelligence community at large and within your own organization:

Stiegg is one of the best computer hackers in SUPO and has shown skill in going undercover to plant surveillance equipment or steal documents. However, his superiors have yet to deploy him in missions requiring demolitions, assassinations, or travel in war-torn areas. There is a perception within the agency that, after what happened to his father, it would be a shame to see Stiegg killed as well.

Do you work alone or in teams, if you work in teams or with a partner please list their name, rank and give a brief summary of your relationship with this partner:

Stiegg almost always works with Support Assistant Kalevi Aho to get ready for a mission. Engineer Lars Sonck provides any special electronic equipment, and sometimes Agent Vesa-Matti Loiri accompanies Stiegg on missions to drive or provide security.

Give a brief description of your current assignment, it’s location, scope and goals:

In his “Skorpion” identity, Stiegg maintains a high position in the Wikileaks organization. Given the recent arrest of Julian Assange, Stiegg is working hard to keep the valuable organization on its feet as an outlet for damaging information against Finland’s adversary, while also trying to stop the group from disseminating anything harmful to Finland’s interests.
