NFL 2011 Week 14 Predictions

Week 14

Browns @ Steelers
----------------------
The Wife: Steelers
Me: Steelers (Steve: The Browns have had high draft picks ever since the expansion . . . they just never seem to really pan out, especially on offense)
Steve: Steelers ("Sorry man, Cleveland has really sucked again. They need to just pull a Detroit and get some high picks to try to build around instead of continue to wallow in misery.")

Chiefs @ Jets
----------------
The Wife: Jets
Me: Jets (Jets should win this and keep the Patriots from clinching for another week)
Steve: Jets ("Neither of these teams thrill me.")

Bucs @ Jags
--------------
The Wife: Bucs
Me: Bucs (blah)

Maybe it is my NHL draft mind where generally there are a few guys considered top tier and then a tier below that, and so on. I don't really care about the NFL draft, but with Suh and the Prince going high these past couple years I've paid a little attention and for the most part got the same feeling, there was a guy or two or three everyone wanted and then the rest. While yes, the Browns picks haven't panned out they really haven't drafted in those top couple "gem" spots that often.

The last 10 years...

2011 Sel.21 Phillip Taylor(DT)
2010 Sel.7 Joe Haden(CB)
2009 Sel.21 Alex Mack(C)
2008 No Pick (not til 104 in fact)
2007 Sel.3 Joe Thomas(OT)
2007 Sel.22 Brady Quinn(QB)
2006 Sel.13 Kamerion Wimbley (OLB)2005 Sel.3 Braylon Edwards(WR)
2004 Sel.6 Kellen Winslow(TE)
2003 Sel.21 Jeff Faine(C)
2002 Sel.16 William Green (RB)

So overall they have only picked top 5, where I would consider those gems (and that's being generous) twice. Expand that to top 10 and that's only 4 picks in 10 years. Sure, many of those picks may not have panned out but I wouldn't say they were "prime" picks either. They picked 21st or later as many times as in the top 10.

Of course the three years prior they picked 1st twice and 3rd and that didn't turn out great for them either, but the draft history of the Browns, be it where they pick or how the picks turn out, certainly isn't good and hasn't helped this team get out of the misery they have been in for some time now.

Compare that to a team like the Lions who went 0-16 not that long ago. Top three picks of late ... Suh, Stafford, Calvin Johnson are all difference makers (and it is looking like they may have gotten better players later in rounds too with Best and Fairley of late). Having those top end picks, and then picking well later, have really turned that team around.

So I guess while I feel that I'm still right in that the Browns haven't had those top end picks come in, I think you're right as well in that when it does come time to pick the Browns aren't getting bang for their buck no matter the position.

Then again despite that the NFL drafts for now where the NHL drafts for the future I think over the past dozen years or so the #1 picks in the NHL have a smaller "bust" chance than football players...
